Professor Park Jae-hyung and Lee Seung-ki of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (Shin So-bin and Nam Kyung-taek) and Dr. Lim Mae-soon of the KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) succeeded in developing an artificial retina 3D transparent micro probe electrode that is 200 times better than the existing performance.
The research team developed a three-dimensional transparent microelectrode in the form of a probe with a sharp tip capable of high-precision stimulation. The electrode concentrates current in a narrow area within 1μm. Neural cell electrical stimulation and neural signal recording were simultaneously measured at high resolution.
The research team developed a high-precision technology that can easily manufacture 3D transparent micro probe electrodes of various heights on a single substrate using semiconductor process technology. Depending on the thickness of the remaining retina of individual patients, the three-dimensional probe height can be optimized to produce customized electrodes.
The research paper was published online in June 2023, "Sensors and Actors B: Chemical (IF=9.21)". The paper is titled "Fabrication of a transparent 3D microelectrodes with two different heights for both neural stimulation and recording."
Dankook University transferred the core technology required for the semiconductor process to Mntek.Co.LTD. The transferred technologies are 'Substrate having penetrating structure and manufacturing method' and 'Package device including substrate having penetrating structure and manufacturing method'.
Ph.D. Hyeong-Min Kim received the Grand Prize at the Beomjeong Academic Paper Award.
